AMD releases X2 3600+: Great budget processor for Media Centers

AMD Has quietly released another Dual core processor aimed at competing with intels low end PentiumD line. Unfortunately for Intel, this Socket AM2 processor will run much cooler than anthing Intel will have to offer at the same price point. The X2 3600+ will run at 2.0GHz and have two 256KB L2 caches (one per core). At the moment it seems nearly impossible for one to get their hands on this processor due to unexpectedly high demand. We expect initial pricing to be in the $140 range and to quickly begin dropping down as low as $100-$120.

NVIDIA's Purevideo HD: More advanced than ever

Codec of choice for myself and many Media Center builder and professionals alike.

NVIDIA PureVideo HD technology
NVIDIA® PureVideo™ HD technology is the combination of high-definition movie decode acceleration and post-processing, HDCP circuitry, and integration with HD movie players that delivers the ultimate high-definition movie experience on a PC.

Discrete, Programmable Video Processor
NVIDIA PureVideo is a discrete programmable processing core in NVIDIA GPUs that provides superb picture quality and ultra-smooth movies with low CPU utilization and power.

Hardware Decode Acceleration
Provides ultra-smooth playback of H.264, VC-1, WMV and MPEG-2 HD and SD movies.

Spatial-Temporal De-Interlacing
Sharpens HD and standard definition interlaced content on progressive displays, delivering a crisp, clear picture that rivals high-end home-theater systems.

High-Quality Scaling
Enlarges lower resolution movies and videos to HDTV resolutions, up to 1080i, while maintaining a clear, clean image. Also provides downscaling of videos, including high-definition, while preserving image detail.

Inverse Telecine (3:2 & 2:2 Pulldown Correction)
Recovers original film images from films-converted-to-video (DVDs, 1080i HD content), providing more accurate movie playback and superior picture quality.

Bad Edit Correction
When videos are edited after they have been converted from 24 to 25 or 30 frames, the edits can disrupt the normal 3:2 or 2:2 pulldown cadence. PureVideo uses advanced processing techniques to detect poor edits, recover the original content, and display perfect picture detail frame after frame for smooth, natural looking video.

Video Color Correction
NVIDIA's Color Correction Controls, such as Brightness, Contrast and Gamma Correction let you compensate for the different color characteristics of various RGB monitors and TVs ensuring movies are not too dark, overly bright, or washed out regardless of the video format or display type.

LCD Sharpening
Notebook LCD displays can exhibit “ghosting” effects because of the slow response time of liquid crystals. The LCD sharpening feature compensates for this slower response time by increasing color signals, thereby automatically reducing ghosting effects.

Integrated SD and HD TV Output
Provides world-class TV-out functionality via Composite, S-Video, Component, DVI, or HDMI connections. Supports resolutions up to 1080p depending on connection type and TV capability.

HDCP Circuitry
Designed to meet the output protection management (HDCP) and security specifications of the Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats, allowing the playback of encrypted movie content on PCs when connected to HDCP-compliant displays.

HD Movie Player Integration
NVIDIA PureVideo HD technology powers the world's leading HD movie player software applications, providing the optimal HD DVD and Blu-ray movie experience.

Great Media Center card: XFX 7600GS

This is the very card I use in my Media Center and have thusfar been pleased with it perfermance. The best part is it is passively cooled and supports NVIDIA's Purevideo HD.

Feed your Media Center the Best: HDVD and Blu-ray

For those that are lucky enough to own either a HD DVD or Blue-ray drive, netflix is an excellent and inexpensive option to keep the HD flowing. The selection is slim at the moment but hey; its better than buying

Take a looks at their HD DVD section or the Blu-ray section

Sotware highlight of the day: MCE Tunes

Windows only: Windows Media Center plug-in MCE Tunes automatically syncs and plays your iTunes music library.

With a paid MCE Tunes upgrade you can play protected m4p tracks, which the developer says is completely legal because there's no decryption, no breaking of any DRM.

I haven't tested MCE Tunes yet, but I'm a huge fan of one of the company's other products: MyTV ToGo, which copies Media Center-recorded TV shows to various portable devices (including the iPod). MCE Tunes' free version supports MP3 and m4a tracks; a $29.99 license enables protected m4p file support, Windows only.

HP shipping Wifi equipped MediaSmart HDTVs

Among the new devices announced at a press event Thursday night was the new SLC3760N 37 inch MediaSmart high-definition LCD TV, which includes wired and wireless connections for home content.

Both a mouthful to say and an innovative flat panel, this $2,199 big screen set is the only hi-definition consumer TV of its size to offer an integrated 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi radio along with standard Ethernet network connections.

Basically combing the streaming multimedia functions of today's digital audio receivers and popular hi-definition televisions, the MediaSmart also connects with PCs running HP's proprietary software. In a demo, for example, HP showed content being backed up to its newly-introduced Media Vault, then played back via the MediaSmart TV.

However, the display only contains a Wi-Fi radio and not a full-fledged router, so users will have to own another Wi-Fi connected device to allow it access to pre-recorded content.

The MediaSmart display accesses music, pictures and video residing on computer hard drives via wired or wireless network. Even better, the TV is replete with AV ports including an optical audio plus HDMI out for connecting directly to stereos and home theater receivers.

The MediaSmart is also a full-fledged HDTV boasting a resolution of 1366 by 768 capable of displaying hi-def programming in luscious 720p. You also get a remote and built-in HDTV tuner. Even more appealing, according to HP, the TV will natively support DivX movies along with a long line of other widely-used video file formats.

Slated to hit store shelves and online retailers immediately, expect the SLC3760N 37 inch MediaSmart High-Definition LCD TV to list for $2,199, HP said.

Processing Power and microsoft Windows Media Center Edition

When I built my First MCE based nobody told the processing power that I would need to wath that gorgeous OTA HDTV signal. Being the cheapo I am i cheaped out bought a single core processor and Athlon 64 3700+ to be exact. it was not later that I noticed the CPU being puished to its fullest when viewing HDTV, making browsing the channel guide while viewting televsion nearly impossible. This was remedied by moving over to a dual core procesor. Right now intel's Core2Duo is king of the hill as far as performance goes, but for those of us who have an older motherboard that we dont want to do away with, a dual core AMD processor or a lower end pentiumD are great economical options.

LG Flatron M4200D 3-D 1080P HDTV

The new Flatron M4200D from LG is a 42" LCD display that enables users to watch 3D images without the need for those pesky, nerdy-looking 3D goggles. Features of the Flatron M4200D includes a brightness level of 500cd/m2, an 8ms response time, a contrast ratio of 1,600 to 1, and a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. Just like how Doom tried to pass 2.5D as 3D before Quake came along, the M4200D looks like another futile exercise in bringing true-to-life images to the viewers.

Mirosoft Delays final release of Windows Media Player 11

Microsoft had initially said that the release version of their latest incarnation of Media Player, version 11, would be available for Windows XP SP2 users to download on Tuesday. But yesterday, the company admitted that the media player still had some bugs to work out and the final release would be set back for "a few additional days."

The player, which is available as a separate download for Windows XP SP2 and is bundled with Windows Vista, has many new features such as the integration with the MTV URGE music download service. Beta versions were first made available to the public back in May.

Personally, I think it's better to wait a bit longer before releasing WMP 11. The version I tried that came with Windows Vista RC1 had some annoying bugs, such as a hilarious glitch that for a time turned 90 percent of my albums into Pat Benatar discs.

Post Acquisition by google: Youtube removes30,000 Videos

Long before Google swooped in to buy up YouTube there were questions about the video sharing site's future. In particular, concerns relating to copyright infringement have persisted: can YouTube be sued, will they be sued? Will a sanitized YouTube be interesting? The recent acquisition by Google all but ensures that the site will remain under the infringe-o-scope of copyright holders for the near future.

In the first major mass removal of content in its history, YouTube has removed nearly 30,000 videos after being contacted by a number of Japanese rights-holders, according to the Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC). The group says that its members found 29,549 videos on YouTube that contain unauthorized materials taken from Japanese sources, including movies, music videos, and television. Japanese broadcast giant NHK was among those seeking the removal of materials.

A spokesperson JASRAC said that they were also considering petitioning YouTube for a better screening process. Although YouTube is legally obligated to remove infringing material when notified, some copyright holders have expressed irritation at the notion that they need to police YouTube themselves.

The spokesperson also suggested that the number of videos to be removed is meant to send a message that this is not a minor problem. Although the DMCA provides safe harbor protections for YouTube inside the United States, rights holders are still concerned that the posting of unauthorized material could hurt their businesses even when they are vigilant and police a site like YouTube.

AOPEN Launches Core 2 Duo XC Cube

This little box Aopen has launched would make an decent and stylish Cube media Center. Dont underestimate it's size. Just check out the specs. For some odd reason they chose to put in an AGP slot as oppose to a PCI-E slot. And no DDR2 to boot. Bad design choices in my opinion.

The XboxMediaCenter 2.0.0 point-release source code has now been set in our CVS. We consider that the current code in the XBMC CVS is as stable as a point-release should be. All XBMC users are highly encouraged to upgrade to this stable Xbox Media Center 2.0.0 point-release. New Version of GBPVR released

New GBPVR v0.98.13 available GBPVR is an excellent FREE windows based PVR and media center (or media centre if you prefer!) solution...

*whats new* 2006-9-20 v0.98.13
- Much improved ATSC HDTV support, including new channel scanning functionality. - Added ATSC QAM support (digital cable) for the OnAir USB HDTV GT device.
- Added support for ViXS based capture cards.
- Added support for new Hauppauge HVR3000/HVR4000 devices including DVB-T, DVB-S and software encoding analog. These devices have one tuner for DVB-S, and another for DVB-T/analog, so these two can be done at the same time. HVR1100/900 could also work in theory with this software encoding, but will require updates to direct.ini. To support the analog side of these devices, GB-PVR reuses several SoftPVR components, so this Hauppauge supplied software must have been installed.
- Fixed a bug that could cause an error stopping live tv with analog devices
- Minor improvement to DVB-T scanning
- Fixed a bug where the left arrow key was not successfully deleting a character when typing a freetext search in the search guide screen. Made things difficult on the MVP.
- Improvements to the DVB EPG option.
- WMV playback on the MVP now uses ffmpeg for transcoding instead of the old trans2mvp method
- Fixed a bug that could cause an error when stopping net radio playback when using 'VMR9 Custom' video renderer
- Integrated functionality for system sounds, much like that available previously in the BleepBloop plugin. Can be enabled/disabled in the Settings screen. Works with all remote types (MCE, Hauppauge, Direct Access etc). Not available on MVP.
- Fixed a bug with the built-in MCE2005 IR Blaster support
- Fixed a problem with learning the ASPECT key when using an USB-UIRT remote control.
- Improved volume control, including OSD graphics. (not for MVP - I have very little control over the volume on the MVP, and no way to determine what the volume is)
- Fixed a bug that could cause live tv to not exit cleanly on an MVP when the tuner needs to be used for a recording.
- Fixed a view bugs with the DVD player, and improved compatibility with DVD nagivators from Cyberlink, Intervideo etc.
